Citrix Workspace An Unknown error occurred while trying to open the resource – Fixed!

Came across this strange error for one particular user on Citrix Workspace app 2603, 2511 and also 2507 LTSR.

The Problem

With multiple people on different PCs accessing the same App in a firm, one user in particular was having the problem on one workstation in particular. Out of 3 computers, the error below was displayed on this one particular PC, which had the same exact software and hardware configuration as the other PCs:

What did not work

  1. Disabling the Security Suite / Software Firewall
  2. Excluding or Whitelisting the App’s domains in the Firewall
  3. Removing and reinstalling Citrix Workspace App
  4. Using Reset Citrix Workspace from Advanced Preferences
  5. Using the Citrix Receiver Cleanup Utility and reinstalling
  6. Windows Disk Cleanup / SFC / Other Built in tools for checking integration
  7. Using a different Windows profile to access the App

Solution

Although re-imaging or reinstalling Windows 11 could have solved the problem, the following worked with no OS reinstall, however they do require advanced knowledge; Modifying the registry incorrectly can corrupt the OS or the application itself.

1. Uninstall the Citrix Workspace APP from Programs & features and Restart the PC.

2. Run the Citrix Receiver Cleanup Utility and Restart the PC again.

Note: Contact the IT department of the App/Facility/Portal you are troubleshooting to get a copy of the Cleanup Tool. They will usually have access to this tool and send you a download link.

3. Cleanup the rest of the registry entries the Citrix Receiver Cleanup Utility left Behind

Perform a full backup of the problematic workstation and also I recommend backing up / exporting a full copy of the registry before any modifications.

Run regedit and search for all Citrix entries and delete them. Once you delete one entry, you can press F3 to find the next.

4. Cleanup the rest of the files the Citrix Receiver Cleanup Utility left Behind

Use an application such as UltraSearch or Everything to locate ALL Citrix related files and folders left behind and delete them:

4. A final cleanup and maintenance – and another PC restart

Run the following commands in an elevated CMD or Powershell Window to check the drive for errors and check the integrity of system files:

chkdsk c: && sfc /scannow

Clean up the registry with an application such as CCleaner (which I used) or your own and restart the computer once again:

5. Change your default browser

Since the Sectra App relies on launching a web browser to login the user, it didn’t hurt to change the default Web Browser from Chome to Edge as a test, and just to make sure corrupt registry entries for this action were re-written. Once I reinstalled Citrix on step 6 and the problem was solved, I switched the default browser back to Chrome.

Go to Settings, Apps, Default Apps. Search for Edge, click on it and then select Set Default.

6. Reinstall Citrix Workspace App

Reinstall the latest version of the Citrix Workspace App or the Windows-Long Term Service Release (LTSR) and try running your application again.
